sym|phy|sis «SIHM fuh sihs», noun, plural -ses «-seez».
1. Anatomy. a) the union of two bones originally separate, either by the fusion of the bony substance or by intervening cartilage, especially of two similar bones on opposite sides of the body in the median line, as that of the pubic bones or of the two halves of the lower jawbone. b) the part or line of junction thus formed. c) an articulation in which bones are united by cartilage without a synovial membrane. d) a union or line of junction or other parts either originally or normally separate.
2. Botany. a fusion or coalescence of parts of a plant normally distinct.
